Got Milk?

Cartoonist David Boswell and a bit of product placement fun with Avalon Dairies...

This is cartoonist David Boswell on a hot summer’s day in his office in the Dominion building in downtown Vancouver. It was shot for the Georgia Straight in, I think, 1999. David is the creator of “Reid Fleming: World’s Toughest Milkman.” I, on the other hand, merely persist in drinking milk from glass bottles. It was a match made in heaven. I had a prop to hand; full and opened in order to give the whole scene a sense of old-world “daring do”.

David also used to do photographs for the Straight. He recalled being paid in grubby $2 bills back when the Straight was being floated by its sister publication The Star Weekly, an adult ads rag that, funnily enough, charged $2 for a personal ad.

We both had Leonard Cohen stories to tell. He managed to actually photograph him and I nearly tripped him with a strobe cord while photographing someone else…
